"A Portrait of a Portrait" ~ This interesting discussion for the class is great for the beginning of the novel. The students view the painting "House by the Railroad" by Edward Hopper and then read "Edward Hopper and the House by the Railroad 1925", a poem by Edward Hirsch. The discussion revolves around what a portrait actually is and why would Joyce claim that his novel was one.

"Musical Revolution" ~ This assignment is designed to help students understand the conflict between the Irish nationalists and unionists reflected in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Nothing helps teenagers cope with the challenges of life quite like music and so this assignment has them explore the 1919 song "The Foggy Dew" which commemorates the Easter Rising and the 1994 song "Zombie" by The Cranberries which commemorates those killed in the Warrington Bombings the year before. This assignment provides context, images, lyrics, and the opportunity for a narrative in order to connect the student with the Irish they're learning about. Below are also links to the two songs on YouTube.
