Time Frame: 1 day.

Standards: ELA.10.R.1.1, ELA.10.R.1.3

"Gabriel Character Analysis" ~ This document explores comparisons between Joyce and Gabriel, his literary avatar. It uses real letters Joyce wrote to his wife, Nora. This includes short analysis questions, a graphic organizer, and a short response prompt at the end.

Time Frame: 2 days.

Standards: ELA.10.R.1.1, ELA.10.R.1.3, ELA.10.R.3.1, ELA.10.R.3.2, ELA.10.R.3.4, ELA.10.C.1.4, ELA.10.C.3.1, ELA.10.V.1.1, ELA.10.V.1.3

"Pair/Group Activities" ~ This document contains two individual activities. The paired activity allows two students to act as marriage counselors to Gabriel and Gretta, analyzing their relationship and character development from a new perspective. The group activity allows multiple students to write editorials for a Dublin newspaper about the party attended by the characters. Each student chooses an angle to analyze the party from which corresponds to a particular literary criticism. This group can contain up to four students. A teacher could do both activities or allow the students to choose which and come up with their own groups.

Time Frame: 3 days.

Standards: ELA.10.R.1.1, ELA.10.R.1.3, ELA.10.R.3.1, ELA.10.R.3.2, ELA.10.R.3.4, ELA.10.C.1.4, ELA.10.C.3.1, ELA.10.V.1.1, ELA.10.V.1.3
