When it comes to professional development, which all secondary teachers must engage in and show evidence of for annual evaluations, it can be daunting to convince an administrator that a teacher can professionally develop in regard to James Joyce and his works. However, as an example of just that, I was able to find this fantastic book by Elizabeth Switaj entitled, James Joyce's Teaching Life and Methods: Language and Pedagogy in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake. After a little convincing of its merits and application to my teaching of Joyce in the classroom, I was able to convince my administrator to do a book study for one of my professional developments. She had no idea the Pandora's box she had opened!
Focusing on Charlotte Danielson's domains, I established a focus, read the book, took notes, developed a plan for implementation of ideas from the book and lessons learned for my classroom, implemented those plans, recorded the results, and wrote this thirteen page paper. While I am not suggesting anyone else take the time to read the paper in its entirety, I wanted to share it and the book with colleagues as an example of how a secondary teacher might be able to professionally develop in this particular content focus of their teaching.
Enjoy!
